Flesh flies are rarely pests of humans and are not known for transmitting diseases. They are occasionally used to determine the time of death of a carcass.

Geographic Region

Flesh flies are found in warm, tropical areas throughout North America.

Natural Habitat

Flesh flies generally do not congregate indoors. They instead are found near recently deceased animals, where they lay their eggs.

Weather Conditions

Flesh flies prefer warm, tropical weather and a semi-liquid environment.

Behavior

Flesh flies are so named because of their habit of planting larvae in the flesh of decomposing animals.

Unique Characteristics

Flesh flies have black and gray longitudinal stripes on the thorax, checkering on the abdomen, and red eyes.
