The Twitter account Insect News recently posted an image that perfectly sums up the first day of Fall in the insect/arachnid world. It also screams, "survival of the fittest".
Normally, spiders are prey of yellowjackets. But in this instance, a spider has caught a yellowjacket and is preparing to make a meal of the insect.
During the summer, yellowjackets look for sources of protein to feed their young. This brings them in contact with humans, especially when we want to enjoy a hamburger or salmon fillet prepared on the grill.
But yellowjackets also feed on other insects and spiders -- so much so that some gardeners regard them as beneficial because they go after garden pests.
In the natural world, tables can sometimes be turned -- especially in Fall, when food sources dry up for yellowjackets, their nests are weakened, and they're in survival mode.
And now that the fall spider mating season is upon us, it appears the arachnid in this photo is getting the last laugh.
The good news? RESCUE! traps allow you to get rid of yellowjackets AND spiders.
