Winston Churchill famously said, “We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.”
‘Tis the season for giving, and community service is a big part of our way of life at RESCUE!. That’s why we were excited and honored to sponsor this year’s Union Gospel Mission (UGM) city-wide Thanksgiving Dinner last month.
Most of our employees had zero experience running the food service at such a large event, which proved hectic and challenging. Over a two-hour time period, 27 RESCUE! folks were spread throughout the Spokane Convention Center ballroom and hustled to serve 1000 meals, fill coffee cups and water glasses, and clear tables – all the while treating each guest with warmth and compassion.
“I was impressed with how patient and generous each of the attendees were with each other and with us as we tried to feed everyone as quickly as possible,” said Ali, Order Management Coordinator. “Serving such an elaborate meal was so much more work than I had imagined… I was tired when it was all said and done but it was all worth it!”
Seeing so many in need was a stark reminder of just how fortunate we all are.
“For me it was humbling,” explained Jim, Vice President of Sales & Marketing. “The realization that the difference between those we served and we servers is only choices and circumstances is both profound and motivational.”
“This was my first time serving with UGM and I had a great experience!” added Jaclyn, Sales Coordinator. “We are truly blessed with so much and it was incredibly humbling to get to serve the people in our community. It was obvious the amount of gratitude from the people to sit in a warm building, be served a warm meal, and in some cases have someone to talk to.”
This act of service was a highlight of the season for our employees. It was rewarding to be part of UGM’s efforts to meet some of the most pressing needs in our backyard and to share our blessings with others. For it is in giving that we receive.
